I ordered my new laptop a few weeks ago and it just arrived!

Kinja'd!!!

Dell XPS 15 7590

9th gen Intel core i9 9980HK
32gb RAM
Nvidia GTX 1650
4k display
1tb SSD

I’m configuring it now, but it’s mothafuckin fast. I’m currently rolling a 6 year old precision M4800 which is still plenty fast on it’s own.

Maybe I can play a PC game now if I want to?

I wish my work laptop was that small. I think mine weighs 13lbs without the power adapter, and at that point- why bother with a laptop?

Does the XPS15 still charge over usb-c?

That thing sounds awesome! I have a company laptop that could likely fit in the keyboard of this beast.

How long does the battery last? USB-C? Does it have HDMI ports?

All I want for my work laptop is a normal 13" laptop instead of this damn Surface Pro that IT gave me when I started . I don’t use any of the tablet functionality, the internal graphics card occasionally gets wonky when pushing multiple displays,  and I’d much rather have a normal keyboard and screen size in meetings.

With a new laptop you’re gonna want to download this file and install it so you can update your webzone access

I love my XPS 15 9550. I got the top of the line spec available at launch in 2015 but with the 1080 screen instead of 4k (I use multiple programs that don’t play well with screen scaling). Still working great for me.

And yes, you can game on it. Mine only has a 960m but it will still play most stuff at 1080 with newer games requiring a resolution drop. If you are going to game on it I suggest propping up the back of the laptop to help air flow. It gets toasty sitting flat on a desk.

The 15 has a dedicated barrel jack for charging but you can charge though the USB C if you choose.

I have a 9550 (late 2015 model with i7-6700hq) and still get 10 hours of battery life  4 years after purchase. USB C is a yes (with Thunderbolt 3!) and it has a single HDMI port.

Meanwhile in public education, we’ve put a hold on purchasing new machines at the regular interval, so my 4-year-old machine is going to keep on being mine.

I do have a 2016 macbook as well, but I tested them side-by-side and they each shitpost at the same speed.

At home, I just use a nice chromebook, probably the best shitposter of the three.

I’m rocking a M4800 as well. I’m upgrading to a Desktop this fall. I will have all the ram.

I’ll bet you can’t play solitaire on it.

I’ve got the XPS 13 with the 3k screen from 2015, wish I’d gone for the 15 now.

I had bought a 13 with that screen in spring of 15 in preparation for college. That machine was not up to the task of running the programs I needed for school and the high res screen was a PITA so I sold it to my dad and bought the 15 as soon as it was announced.

I don’t hate the surface pro, we order them speced all the way up also for our people that think they look cool with them. I have one guy running 5 displays but the setup is super janky and I can’t believe it works. I told him for certian it wouldn’t.

I agree though. Screen too small, don’t care about touch. etc

It’s not completely terrible, but I don’t get any use from the “benefits” of this form factor, and it makes it worse for how I actually want to use the thing, which is as a laptop . E very time I take it into a meeting and need to find something in Outlook, if Outlook was opened on one of my external monitors, resizing it for the Surface screen screws up everything. Badly. Windows and especially Office is crap at resizing things for different displays when docking/undocking and the screen size on the Surface only makes this problem worse.

We let everyone have (almost) full access until they give us a reason not to. O ur infrastructure is all c loud, we have mobile device management . So I can pick and choose what people have access to instantly.

It took a day, sometimes more to setup one PC when I first got into the biz. Now I rarely touch them when they arrive . I order them from Dell and s end them the user and a one time passcode and the laptops arrive as I configured them in the cloud. Technology is crazy man

Nothing that necessitates that sort of juice. One of the partners at my firm wanted to go nicer than our standard (Still super nice) Latitude E7400 w max specs.... So I ordered him this. Dell sent two by accident I could have returned it but I haven’t had a “ new” computer since I started almost 6 years ago.

It was meant to be, haha.

XPS is real nice. Best keyboard in the biz, but Lenovo’s X1 possibly better in that. Otherwise, it’ll last you a very long time. I still have a 2nd gen i7, xps15 . Baterys gone but it's still a great for getting things done.
